King George and other madness

There is a popular conspiracy theory that the Indian national anthem was writted by Tagore around the time the coronation of King George V was happening. The theory goes on to say that the Congress talked about using the song to praise the King.

There are many online discussions about it, which can be summarized in the same way all internet discussions can be summarized – “I am very smart, you are an ignorant <regional insult> <religious insult>”

(Around 4 page downs into the discussion linked above, you can see the first regional insult)

The Govt. of India gives this as its official translation of the anthem .

My grouse is this:

Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people,
Dispenser of India’s destiny.

They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise.
The saving of all people waits in thy hand.

Who is this “Bhagya Vidhata”? If he is just the collective Indian spirit, the anthem comes across as a nice, feel-good ditty.

But if he is, (as Tagore himself puts it )  The Lord of India’s Destiny, I take issue. Is it fair to push on unsuspecting patriots the helplessness of religion?
